Indian programmer article

Got the link to an article titled 'A myth called the Indian programmer' from a friends blog. The article is quite interesting and for most part of it, I found myself saying 'Amen'.

Some interesting quotes from the above mentioned article.

' Most software professionals in India are not programmers, they are mere coders'
'Coders are akin to smart assembly line workers as opposed to programmers who are plant engineers'
'Coders have fallen into the trap of the software hype and now realise that though their status is glorified in the society, intellectually they are stranded.'
'Software companies started picking all the engineers they could as the US authorities granted visas only to graduates who had four years of education after high school'
'After Y2K, as American companies discovered India's cheap software professionals, the demand for engineers shot up'

Points to ponder over for the over-hyped, over fed on ego, wastrel software engineers in India. Am not too proud that I was part of the gang once upon a time. Also points to ponder over for all the to be father-in-laws and mother-in-laws who are shouting from roof tops for fiancees for their sons/daughters with the condition that he/she should be employed in IT :). While the nature of the job cannot be changed, one can definitely get a reality check on what one is doing.

@para - plz continue to drop by :)

@ba3 - firstly, there are always exceptions.. secondly its not about ones capabilities, instead its more about the real work type..

I personally feel that it is a highly critical way of looking at things. Any industry would have their share of brain intensive and non-intensive work. This is true for every country.

As far as the matrimony market goes, there was a time when a govt job holder was considered a prized catch. This ofcourse included ppl in all sorts of positions and just not the ones with a plump posting.
These are more passing fads and change with time.

You should also finally look at how many people in any company can become the so called 'programers'. I am sure you would find that those who are capable, become programmers. It would be an absolute disaster if just every one had to become a prorammer.

I would conclude by saying that, it might be true that the job of a SW engineer in some companies is more the assembly line stuff. But you always have a choice to move out.

You cannot have a country in which all its citizens are rulers.

@ narasim - the criticism is more for the hype surrounding such work and not for the work itself... there is no doubt far far far too much hype surrounding an IT job than it actually deserves.
