Sukinda & Vapi

These two hitherto unheard of towns in India have now become (in)famous. They are amongst the top 10 most polluted places on the planet. Now, isn't that such a wonderful tag to attach to your town. Unfortunately, to most of the industrialists, these two towns are mere externalities.

For people who had known and been in chennai, a part of a place in velachery called pallikarnai, is now a big place for dump, trash, and all kind of wastes. This place was once a sanctuary for birds and I could remeber a nice lake in this place long back.

I had a chance to cross the pallikarnai road last month during my india trip, and wondered what we have done to create such a huge dump. The car stopped on the way for a minute, within which I could sense the intoxication.

The irony in this is there are multistory software companies raised on the sides of these dumps. pity the employees.

Dumping one place, and polishing the other is the immediate effect of globalzation. We have been trained showing only the polish sides, and for people on the dump side, this gloabalization has given only WASTES!
