Hunger in India

Hunger in Indian states alraming - Report on BBC
There is a graph in there that shows that Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Bihar and Jharkhand are the states that are in the worst shape. The hindi heartland is certainly in pathetic shape! Also, MP's situation is comparable with the problems of Chad and Ethiopia.

Reminds me of the tamil poem...
பிள்ளைக்குப் பாலில்லா பிச்சையரின் தேசத்தில்,
கல்லிற்குப் பாலூற்றும் கதையொழிதல் என்னாளோ?

( In a country of beggars where kids don't have milk,
when will the practice of giving milk to stones stop? )

Of course, the second line can be in so many ways other than the usual way (though I agree with the current version too).

The picture of the girl with a kid in her hand says volumes. It puts the whole idea of socialism in perspective. Is wealth redistribution a sin? What is your take on this? I personally believe, private organizations and individuals can accomplish only to a certain extent. It is the government that needs to do the major share of work here. Unfortunately corruption rules regardless who is in power. At times it makes me wonder, will all these ever change or are we just pacing towards the inevitable. Can things never get better?? I am sorry, the picture has evoked a lot of questions in me and I am agonized by pain and anger at my unwillingness/incapacity to do anything about this.

@Anon - I dont have any "big" answers. I am pained too. As you said, at both the situation and at my inability. Its indeed a pretty sad situation.
